Top 10 rpg games for PC

I am a long time fan of rpg games. What I like about them is that you get attached to your character as well as the world they occupy. If you care about what happens to your character, the game becomes a lot more fun. In my list of: top 10 rpg games for PC, I have include some of my old favorites as well as a few great new role playing games..

Dragon Age: Origins

Once in a while a game comes along and takes the rpg world by storm. Dragon Age Origins is just such a game.

The elements which I liked in the game where: The worlds interesting and rich background story, great voice acting (this is where rpg games frequently fall flat on their face), lots of skills, spells and equipment which increases your character's depth, many great quests and a compelling main story line.

Just a friendly warning, your choices do affect how the game develops, right from the beginning.

In my opinion Dragon Age is the best game since Baldurs Gate 2, way back in the early days of rpgs.

Dragon Age: Origins
Amazon Price: $10.00
List Price: $29.99
Fallout 3
Amazon Price: $10.95
List Price: $19.99

Fallout 3

This is not a game for kids. The rating on Fallout 3 is M and for good reason.

Fallout 3 is set in a post nuclear apocalyptic Washington DC. The radiation hasn't been kind to the minds or bodies of the survivors. You where fortunate enough to grow up in a bunker called Vault 101. One day your father goes missing under mysterious circumstances. This forces you out of the safety of the bunker and into the wasteland.

The game is played from a first person perspective. The same as first person shooters like Quake.

If I where to sum up Fallout 3 in one word, it would be intense.

PC-GUILD WARS PLATINUM
Amazon Price: $19.90
List Price: $29.95

Guild Wars Platinum

Guild Wars is a MMORPG which means that it uses the internet to let thousands of RPG gamers get together online and play in a persistant fantasy world. Most MMORPGs charge a monthly fee for gamers to play on their servers. Guild Wars doesn't charge a monthly fee, you pay to buy the game and then you can keep playing it indefinitely.

I feel I should include a warning here. Guild Wars is fairly addictive and unlike other rpgs there is no end to the game.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords

This rpg is good, but a little older than the other ones here. I would only recommend it to fans of Star Wars.

The Sith Lords takes place thousands of years before the Star Wars movies. It is focused on some of the initial struggles between the Jedi and their power-hungry enemies, the Sith.

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel

If lot's of questing and roleplaying isn't for you try Sacred 2. In Sacred 2 it's all about hacking and slashing your way through seemingly endless enemies. It's the same kind of fun I had with the Diablo series.

The game is a real looker, the graphics and sound backs up the action nicely.

Mount & Blade

Mount and blade's strongest feature is it's combat engine. However they don't force you to play a warrior you can be a merchant, a rebel, a mercenary, a vassal or even a tournament specialist.

You can do several of these one after another, defining your character by your choices.

The game has some very nice distractions from the main plot like boxing and gambling.

The Dark Eye: Drakensang

The Dark Eye made the top ten list, because it's great value for money. It offers a lot of satisfying rpg gaming for very little cash.

This game is from a German gaming company, but it gives you everything you want in a rpg. With just the right amount of heroes, looking to make a name for themselves and wizards in pointy hats.

The Witcher 2

In the Witcher you use both sword and magic to damage your enemies. The magic is fairly limited though. The alchemy you use is far more interesting. Your hero can whip up a number of potions and oils to heal and improve your weapons.

I have to say the Witcher has great graphics and audio.

The original Witcher had quite a bit of nudity which they cut out of the USA version. There is still plenty of violence though.

Hey, i completely agree with your choices. Dragon Age is def a winner and i like what you've written about it, Bioware generally make very good games! Perhaps you should update your list with Skyrim, anything Bathesda game is a winner in my eyes for RPG's!

Firstly KoTOR 2 addressed some balance issues that came about in the first one, (biggest being the addition of weapon finesse feats) Secondly, Yes the elder scrolls series should be on the list. Third, Fallout 3 did a damned good job of bringing an epic franchise out of the dark ages. I loved fallout and fallout 2, but fallout 3 brought it into the modern age, and in my opinion it has one of the most intelligently adaptive engines around, even if there are some glitches here and there.

These games all except couple (witcher, dao) suck! Long time rpg player lol. What about PST, Fallout 1, 2, BG1 and 2 , Icewindale, arcanum, wizardry 8, might and magic, Kotor (second is better than first? is that a bloody joke?), first expansion for NWN 2 and etc? Bloody console gamers....

Seriously?! 14 months ago

Dragon age the best?! Entirely linear story, poor game play, hardly challenging. If eyecandy alone shakes your tree, sure... I expect a little more from a number 1.

You people should try these for a taste of true quality RPG:

Fallout 2 (FYI: Fallout 3 is a storyline FPS so shouldn't even be listed)

Baldur's gate 2

Planescape:Torment

Those above (and Diablo 2 obviously) should be part of any PC rpg top 10!

Diablo 2: LOD is still a VERY popular game, and its awsome! it should be on any top lists of RPG for pc

Corrosive 21 months ago

Technology and eye candy =/= good game play.

Therefor, diablo 2 should still be one of the top.

dragon age is by far 1 of the worst rpgs ive ever played. but as for the rest you had some pretty good choices.

Dragon Age is pretty much the best RPG I've ever played.

While the dude Gavin up above says Diablo 2 is better than most of these games, for it's time, I agree. Generally, it's not though. All of these games have come out later meaning they have better technology to work on them.

Gavin 22 months ago

dude diablo 2 lod was better than so much of these games

I agree with rickturban. Your list was flawless but for KOTR 2. The original knights of the old republic was simply amazing. Even if you've never seen starwars it could still be awesome. It ranks up there with baldurs gate 2 for me.

Why have this one Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords when you can have the original one with Revan, was a much better story and groundbreaking for its day. The sequel was just more of the same, but without the epic story.

Can't argue with these choices at all. These are all great games that are of high class. Cheating for some games is necessary. I know how frustrating they get

Can't argue with your choices - well perhaps Mount & Blade - but aside from that I agree. I also agree about Dragon Age - it's by Bioware so you knew you'd get something good - but it's the only RPG in a long time that I haven't even thought about cheating on - most of the others get monotonous and I end up cheating just to end the game - not tempted so far!!!
