Best Steam Iron 2016

Updated on November 23, 2015

I will shortly review 3 steam irons in best steam iron 2016: a premium steam iron (Rowenta), a very popular one from Panasonic, as well as a cordless model from Panasonic.

When selecting a steam iron there are a couple of things you should keep in mind.

  1. Sole plate: There is the standard soles, but also non-stick and non-scratch ones. Also the higher end ones heat up faster than the cheaper ones.
  2. Iron weight: Heavier irons work better, but your wrists become tired more quickly. The weight is also related to how much water the iron can take and how long you can use it before refilling the water.

Rowenta DW8080 Pro Master Iron

Its challenging to find a durable, good quality and reliable iron these days, especially with all the made in China ‘made for life’ brands which fall apart in a month or less. An iron obviously needs efficiency and good quality and some other extra handy features are great option too. The Rowenta DW8080 Pro Master Iron, which for the past 100 years has been made in Germany. The quality and excellence of this brand has been outstanding for decades, so it is easy to see why people are quite happy to pay up to $100 for one. Sure to last you a few decades, Rowenta makes for a good investment that is worth it. Rowenta irons are now being made in China and I wonder if that will affect the quality of the products.

A nice new feature on this iron is the 3-way smart automatic shut off system. This means the iron switches off automatically when left for 8 minutes vertically, 30 seconds horizontally and 30 seconds tipped over. This kind of safety feature is a huge advantage and could prevent some serious accidents from occurring.

The  DW8080 also has variable steam, cool spray mist to remove stubborn wrinkles. The impressive 12.7 water tank allows for long ironing sessions. This saves a lot of time. There is also an anti calc system and a self cleaning system, which uses mineral deposits to keep the iron clean. A popular feature with users is the 7 foot electrical cord with the 360-degree pivot.

Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry Iron with Stainless-Steel Soleplate

Panasonic has been a reputable brand for many years and the Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry Iron with Stainless-Steel Soleplate 084140 option is with the golden housekeeping seal of approval.

The unique selling point is probably the detachable water tank and steam ironing. I however found the tank to be too small for my needs. The steam cleaning on the other hand is a huge bonus, as you find it easy to iron your clothes whilst they’re hanging up, great for curtains too. The temperature ranges from 176 to 392 degrees F.

What I quite enjoy about the iron is the 5 temperatures for different fabrics, which is printed on the bottom of the iron for reference. For Panasonic, they are not doing that bad, the iron performs all the functions with a retractable reel in cord for tidy storage, making it a handy and affordable appliance around the house. The anti calcium system is excellent; it prevents the water from hardening. The steam iron is quite heavy and this is what makes it so effective, but a little tedious for working with.

I unfortunately found the base to be a little less stable than I would like. Also, with the cord coming from the right, a left-handed person might find the positioning uncomfortable.

Panasonic NI-L70SR Cordless Steam/Dry Iron Panasonic NI-L70SR Cordless Steam/Dry Iron

For many people cordless irons are the future. The non-fussy, quick ironing outweighs the other brands. The Panasonic's NI-L70SR Cordless Steam/Dry Irons heat up when charged, on the useful charging base. There is also automatic shut-off, anti drip and other useful features.

An absolute essential is the ‘stay clean’ vents. There is also a 5-1/8-ounce water tank, which is detachable, very useful for water refills and doesn’t drip or spill much. To keep the iron going, the best thing to do is to put the iron on the base when not ironing and in-between ironing. So it can be fully charged, never losing heat on you. The secure base is great, especially around children. Creating a much safer environment.

The digital temperature settings make ironing far more futuristic than vintage steam irons and so does its see through carry case. This makes it very convenient for traveling. The new technology means that the iron traps air between the soleplate and the fabric, making for smooth gliding and better ironing. What scores many brownie points is the heat resistant carry case. This means that it is easy to pack away, instantly. Making it safer for everyone and more efficient, as you don’t need to wait for the iron to cool down.

I hope you found the information in best steam iron 2016 useful. I would also recommend reading Dirt Devil steam mop reviews and Hoover steam vac review.
